The enclosed stata do file alltables20160302.do can be used to recreate the tables and graphs of the paper forthcoming in the Review of Economic Studies. Stata 12.1 (or later) software is required.
The results in this paper were produced using the enclosed do file alltables20160302.do and the six Stata-format data files described below in Stata 12.1. Using a 3.4GHz Intel i7-3770 processor with 8 Gb of RAM running Windows 7 Professional SP1, it took approximately 3.5 hours to run.
Sources for all data are described in the paper and appendix.
The following stata data files are included: - maindata.dta contains the data used for all analysis in the paper except for those portions described below. - global_total_dn_uncal.dta is replication data from Henderson, Storeygard and Weil (2012). It is used to estimate the regressions in Table 1 columns 1-3. - gdp_light_growth_china.dta contains information on lights and GDP for Chinese prefectures and cities proper, with imputed GDP data removed. It was provided by Qinghua Zhang. It is used to estimate the regressions in Table 1, columns 4 and 5. - dhs.dta contains route information and information on household generator ownership from 5 Demographic and Health Surveys: Angola (2011), Cameroon (2011), Ghana (2008), Liberia (2007), and Nigeria (2008). It is used to estimate the regression in Table 6, column 5. - ipums.dta contains route information and manufacturing by administrative unit for 4 countries from census data: Ghana (2000), Guinea (1983), Senegal (1988), and Tanzania (2002). It is used to estimate the regression in Table 9, column 3. - popdata.dta contains population data by city, and distance to the primate times oil price. It is used to estimate the regressions in Table 11.
