GIS Replication information
GIS Replication information Adam Storeygard March 2016
The enclosed files can be used to recreate the final stata data files for the paper "Farther on down the road: transport costs, trade and urban growth in sub-Saharan Africa" forthcoming in the Review of Economic Studies.
Note that those stata data files are also available in the directory replicationstata. There is no need to use the data and scripts in replicationgis in order to replicate the paper's results.
Users unfamiliar with ArcGIS, and specifically with the Arc Macro Language (AML) are not encouraged to start from this point.
The following software is required (with versions used) - Stata 12.1 - ArcGIS 10.2.2 for Desktop with Advanced License and Network Analyst and Spatial Analyst extensions, and ARC/INFO workstation (arc.exe) - Python 2.7.5 (IDLE GUI; typically included with ArcGIS) - An unzip utility (enclosed code uses 7zip in a Windows batch file)
The enclosed Excel file data_sources.xlsx contains detailed source information for each input file. It also contains detailed step-by-step instructions for creating the final stata data files. Most instructions involve running a script in one of the above softwares. A few involve a different kind of interaction with ArcGIS (ArcCatalog and/or ArcMap).
Each script includes references to the directory "D:\proj\africa\replicationgis". These must be replaced with the appropriate local directory.
Required data that are not included in the present archive fall into three categories: - 30 files named F.v4.tar, substituting numbers for and , are excluded due to their large size. These are available from the replication archive for Henderson, Storeygard and Weil (2012) here: http://dx.doi.org/10.1257/aer.102.2.994 - ipumsi_00001.dat.gz contains restricted-access harmonized census microdata for Ghana (2000), Guinea (1983), Senegal (1988), and Tanzania (2002) from IPUMS International. These data are only necessary for Table 9, column 3. The required variables are: cntry year sample serial wtper age indgen empstat (integrated) and distgh prefgn deptsn disttz (unharmonized). To request access, register and select data at https://international.ipums.org - Restricted survey data (AOHR61FL.dta; CMHR60FL.dta; GHHR5AFL.dta; LBHR51FL.dta; NGHR52FL.dta) and cluster locations (AOGE61FL.shp; CMGE61FL.shp; GHGE5AFL.shp; LBGE52FL.shp; NGGE52FL.shp) from the following five Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS): Angola (2011), Cameroon (2011), Ghana (2008), Liberia (2007), and Nigeria (2008). These data are only necessary for Table 6, column 5. To request access, register and select data at http://measuredhs.com
