About

The Access to Modern Energy Cooking Services: Players and Initiatives Database is part of the knowledge products under the 2020 State of Access to Modern Energy Cooking Services report, developed by the World Bank’s Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP), in close collaboration with Loughborough University on Modern Energy Cooking Services Program (funded by UK Aid of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office), and the Clean Cooking Alliance. You can view the Executive Summary of the report here.
The State of Access to Modern Energy Cooking Services is a product of the research efforts implemented under the Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) program, a five-year initiative funded by UK Aid of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and led by Loughborough University and the World Bank’s Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP). The MECS Program aims to accelerate the global transition from traditional biomass-based cooking to modern-energy cooking solutions. Following on the 2015 report, The State of the Global Clean and Improved Cooking Sector, led by ESMAP and the Clean Cooking Alliance [formerly Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves], this second global report, also led by ESMAP, in collaboration with Loughborough University and the Clean Cooking Alliance, presents newly compiled evidence and insights to guide continued sector progress toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 7.1 for 2030.
As part of the research efforts to gain a deeper understanding of the supply-side ecosystem of the cooking sector, this qualitative database takes stock of cooking players across the globe, as well as cooking initiatives taking place at a national, regional, and global level. The players database builds from the Clean Cooking Alliance's Partner Directory (last accessed 18/08/2019), which includes self-reported information by industry players. The initiatives database does not represent an exhaustive list of programs, but rather seeks to provide a broad sample of stove and fuel initiatives spanning different geographies and technologies. Preference for compilation has been given to initiatives active since 2015, when the previous State of the Modern Cooking Sector report was published.
